Put together one part of historically famous Dutch art and one part of semi-modern technology and you’ll have a nice cocktail called Composition with Javascript. Based on Piet Mondrian’s 1920 ‘Composition with Yellow, Red, Black, Blue and Grey’, it allows people to deconstruct the original painting and form it again in whatever he or she wants.

The UK based design studio, Nation, announced  the stamp will be available for purchase in the new shop. Now we can all have a FaceBook “Like” Button… err… rubber stamp to show when we like certain things that come across our desk during our workday. It’s so simple, so obvious and so brilliant! They also created a dislike stamp. Perfect for me, because I dislike a lot.

It’s Winter Olympic time again and even if you find it deadly boring you might appreciate this collection of official posters from 1924 to 2010.

There are load of amazing ways to use Google Maps – but here’s a new twist. Markus Dressen made his own design showcase using the Google Maps engine. Using an application, like CASA’s Image Cutter or the Automatic Tile Cutter, you can create your own map tiles for Google Maps. This means that you can replace image map tiles with any image you like. Or even replace them with portfolio images. via the Heavy Backpack blog.

Created out of a love for posters, modernism and television, designer Albert Exergian imagined his own brief to develop a series of posters to advertise famous TV shows. You can see them spread over several pages of his blog. The one above is for… (can you guess?)… Kojak.

Jessica Hische. She started a project called the Daily Drop Cap, where she designs a drop cap every day and makes her Drop Cap designs available for free download.

If you’ve been in Norway this past year or so, you may have happened upon The Strømer, an interactive LED wall that turns shadows into light. Based on architect Stig Skjelvik’s Dobpler prototype, the display lights up as people move through Norway’s Sandnes Sentrum pedestrian tunnel, leaving illuminated trails in their wake. Constructed as part of the city’s European Capitol of Culture 2008 event.

The Typo/graphic Posters project has relaunched its omnibus of typopgraphic genius, which features a curated selection of posters done by over 300 designers and agencies from around the world.

The site puts other online galleries to shame–with thumbnail views of all the work, and detailed views which let you pan around by grabbing the images, and enlarge them using the scroll wheel on your mouse.

Nokia create a campaign for their new Bluetooth Headsets.  Why not allow users to create their own headset designs. Enter it into the gallery and have the public and some high profile judges from the music industry vote on it. The winner will even get their headphone design made. We created a style palette, which acted as a quick way to jump straight in and start creating. We also allowed the more advanced users to download the headphone 3d files and assets to use as their base for there creations.

The Red Ribbon is the international symbol of support for people living with HIV. Wearing a red ribbon is a great way to raise awareness about HIV as well as to break down stigma and prejudice, so make sure you get yours!

Even iconic designs can die. This pictorial history of the London Underground Tube map, including the classic diagramatic Henry Beck version, ends with a vision of how it has ended up. Totally messed up. What a shame.

A few months ago, Dustin Curtis wrote an article expressing his displeasure with American Airlines‘ hideous online presence. He also spent some time mocking up a redesigned version of their website. To his surprise, a user experience designer at AA.com emailed him an amazing response describing some of the design problems faced in large corporations.  An hour after Dustin Curtis  posted the response, American Airlines fired Mr. X.

Bits ‘n Pieces is a traveling exhibition of work by international designers, architects, computer scientists, and material and technology researchers. It will showcase projects that anticipate the next phase of the digital revolution, focusing on how society is imbued with, shaped by and shapes technology. Check out some of the work including this sofa pictured above which was designed using brainwave patterns.
